The West Rock Ridge State Park and its Advisory Council were established in
1975 as the result of a local grass roots movement to protect the land
from threats such as development and communication towers. West Rock
Ridge is the only State Park in Connecticut, out of more than 90 such
parks, to have its own Advisory Council. The council is made up of 3
members from each of the adjoining towns (Bethany, Woodbridge, Hamden
and New Haven), and 3 appointees from the State Department of
Environmental Protection. In Bethany, one representative is appointed by
each of the following: the Board of Selectmen, the Conservation
Commission and the Planning and Zoning Commission.
